Pedros Castle Photos: Grand Cayman’s Big House
Larger sized Pedros Castle Photos from Grand Cayman’s Big House. This was the heart of Grand Cayman in the early days, when the settlers were getting to grips with the island. Pretty much anything that happened in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s happened here.
This plaque commemmorates the beginnings of local democracy and island government in 1831
Inside the big house, the interior is beautifully decorated in the style of the mid-1800’s. It looks like the family are out visiting for the day but will be returning soon for afternoon tea.
Our Victorian forebears were much keener on strong colors than we are. We prefer pastel, neutral walls where they went for something like this one — ox-blood.
Perhaps it was appropriate for the dining room, knowing Britons love of red meat in those far off days. It was no accident the French called the English ‘Rosbifs’.
With the dark mahogany panelling and beams, and the white ceiling, the deep red is very effective but a tad overpowering to my modern eye. I’m an igloo sort of person myself, white walls are just fine.
