Grand Cayman’s Butterfly Farm
Grand Cayman’s Butterfly Farm is one of the newer attractions. Just off the Harquail Bypass on the outskirts of George Town, the ‘farm’ is a quaint Cayman cottage with the butterfly enclosures immediately behind.
The cottage is also the gift shop and reception. For more information call: 345-946-3411
Guides are available to show you round or you can stroll among the butterflies and flowering shrubs, taking it at your own pace.
The guides also walk you through the life cycle of butterflies from eggs, through chrysalis to adult butterfly. I remember this from school but it’s a lot more interesting with the real thing in front of your eyes.
And what butterflies, they come in all shapes, sizes and colors — particularly colors. The images on this page give you a sampling but you have to see them yourself to really appreciate them. Of course a bright Cayman sun, sky and flowers provide the perfect backdrop.
The butterflies in the farm aren’t native butterflies (in a strange example of globalization, they’re flown out from Britain regularly and they’re not British natives either) but in Grand Cayman’s hot sun and tropical setting they look more realistically at home than in the northern cities where similar farms have sprung up in recent years.
One more thing I liked about the Farm is they give you a free pass to visit again during your vacation. Sometimes it really does pay to shop early.
The Butterfly Farm’s have a webpage for their Caribbean sites
www.thebutterflyfarm.com
where you can learn more about butterflies and, if you’re on a cruise, other farms to visit.
