Cayman Kayak Tour:
Grand Cayman’s Dry Ocean Adventure

A cayman kayak tour of Grand Cayman’s glowing bio-luminescent water and mangrove trees around the water’s edge of North Sound is the best way to get close to nature while keeping you dry, providing you don’t flip the kayak of course.

If you don’t like the idea of kayaking at night, there are mangrove tours by kayak during daylight hours. Here you’ll see some of the smaller birds and animals of Grand Cayman.

Based on Northside (345-926-4467), Cayman Kayaks offer tours by day and night, though the night tours only go out when the conditions are right, which is generally around the times when the moon is not too bright or full. The darkness is needed to ensure the bioluminescent sea creatures light up the water, or at least so you can easily see them doing it. The night tours are among the mangroves near Rum Point.

Their day time trips run Monday to Friday mornings at 9:30, or thereabouts, and leave from the Seven Mile Beach side of the Sound. Contact them through their website Cayman Kayaks.

Sea Elements does guided tours using sit-on-top tandem kayaks that are comfortable for the riders both physically and mentally — provided the two riders can agree, of course:-).

Their day time tours also leaves from the Seven Mile Beach side of the Sound but at about 8:30 am. They also do bioluminescence tours. You can reach them here.

Both groups’ tours are around 2 hours long so you need to be reasonably fit to paddle that length of time in the hot sun. Being confident on the water helps too because kayaks aren’t the most stable of craft. If you do go kayaking, it may be safest to take your camera wrapped in a waterproof cover — just in case.

One of the best things about the kayaking is that you reach places other transport can’t, particularly on the Northside and North Sound where there are areas unserviced by road. Kayaking, boating or hiking is the only way to get to these areas and see wildlife you won’t always see on land.

One of the things I like about the kayaks used by both Cayman tours is that they are the open-topped, sit-on rather than in, boats, which are wider and more stable than the more traditional kayak. I carry my camera everywhere and these boats feel a lot safer for doing that.

You’ll find more about kayaking through the mangroves on our page Kayak Tours.
